They can steal a lot of your important data, including your account numbers and passwords and send them across to a remote location. You must therefore consider quite a few points before downloading freeware software. Following are discussed all such points:

Find out what the company is about and what kind of products it has developed in past. Also, check the track record of the company. No reputed company would install a Spyware on your computer.

You must research about the freeware product that you intend to install. Read what people have to say about it. People must have experiences with it that they may have shared on various forums and communities. Also, do not get carried away by one single good review about the product. Collect many reviews and draw a conclusion about the product. Only if you are a 100% sure about the product should you download it.

Another very good test is to visit a reputed software downloading site, and see if the product exists there. Reputed sites would never display products that are troublesome. In case you find the product in the list, you can safely download it. However, in case the product does not exist in the list, you may drop the idea or else survey more about the product. The key is to research until you are certain about the credibility of the software.

Make sure to read the terms and conditions of the software. You can get a feel about the authenticity of the product from the license agreement as well. Although this is not a very dependable means of gauging a freeware, it can still give you a fair idea.

If you believe in downloading and installing freeware on your computer you must have an anti Spyware in place. In case you happen to install a Spyware in an attempt to install your freeware, you may still be safe if you have an anti Spyware installed. Also, make sure that the Spyware is updated to the latest version. Older version of anti Spyware may not detect a new Spyware.

Should you install freeware? Well, there is no harm in installing something that comes for free. However, you must ensure that the software you are installing is authentic and safe. In other words, if you can play it safe, you could enjoy the freeware products.
